Lib Dems Slam “Big, Blunt and Remote” Council Plan for East Hampshire

18 Jul 2025

East Hants Liberal Democrat councillors have condemned a decision to back a “big, blunt and remote” reorganisation of local government that would see East Hampshire absorbed into a bloated unitary authority with Basingstoke, Aldershot, Winchester, and others.

East Hants Lib Dems voted unanimously against the plan, criticising the lack of consultation with East Hants' residents and businesses, and the absence of any clear plan for how local services and identities will be protected.

“This is being forced through without meaningful consultation of East Hampshire's residents or businesses,” said Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Elaine Woodard. “The last government structure has been in place for over 50 years - we need to ensure that local communities are protected and decision-making isn’t too remote.”

"The district council has long delivered essential services directly to communities, with a deep understanding of local needs at a town and village level. That local responsiveness risks being lost, and there’s been no meaningful plan to protect it,” said Lib Dem Group Deputy Leader Cllr Emily Young.

The proposal was pushed through by the Conservative administration, supported by Green, Labour and Independent councillors.

East Hants Lib Dems are calling for proper public consultation and a rethink that puts communities - not cost savings - at the heart of any future reorganisation.
