Lib Dems campaign to protect our chalk streams

2 Mar 2026

Safeguarding East Hampshire’s underground natural reservoirs and water filtration systems — its chalk aquifers — is a key priority for the Liberal Democrats.

Alton District Councillor Ginny Boxall has been campaigning hard on this, and her EHDC motion to add protection was carried unanimously.

Ginny Boxall, toigether with the party’s East Hampshire parliamentary candidate, Dominic Martin, are committed to protecting these vital resources, along with the area’s precious chalk streams.

Chalk aquifers capture rainfall and naturally filter it through networks of tiny fissures and fractures in the rock. This process slowly releases clear, mineral-rich water into chalk streams such as the Rivers Itchen, Meon and Wey, which provide a significant proportion of East Hampshire’s drinking water.

also Liberal Democrat MP Pippa Heylings is introducing a bill to give UNESCO status to these rare river systems, which would add weight to chalkstream protection.
